Problem-Oriented Research; An Approach to Responding to Society's Needs

Abstract

In today's world, our country is facing complex challenges in the social, economic, environmental, and technological fields. In such circumstances, scientific research can play a key role in providing effective and sustainable solutions. However, research that is conducted solely for the purpose of producing articles does not have the ability to respond to the real needs of society. In contrast, problem-oriented research focuses on solving real and tangible problems of society and is therefore an inevitable necessity.

Responding to the needs of society is part of the social responsibilities of academics and researchers. Issues such as climate change, poverty, social inequality, emerging diseases, war, sanctions, and economic crises are important and complex concerns today. Attention to the limitations of financial and human resources also requires that resources be avoided in unnecessary research.

Problem-based research, by focusing on objective problems, provides solutions that are in line with the goals of sustainable development and improving the quality of life of society. This type of research begins with the precise identification of a problem, and all stages of the research are designed around its solution. An important feature of this approach is the cooperation between researchers, government institutions, the private sector, and the local community. The results of such research are usually presented in the form of practical solutions and have the ability to adapt to changes and new needs of society.

Despite the importance of this approach, it also faces challenges, including financial constraints, the complexity of social and environmental issues, and the resistance of some institutions or individuals to change. However, investing in this area, strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations, and creating the necessary infrastructure can turn problem-based research into a powerful tool for sustainable development and progress of the country. Conducting repetitive research that has no benefit for society is a waste of time and national funds. Unfortunately, much of the research in developing countries does not have tangible outcomes for the people of that country and is more likely to serve the needs of developed countries. Therefore, a fundamental review of theses and academic research - especially in medical fields - and directing them towards solving real problems in society is an undeniable necessity. Applying research can be a driving force for positive and fundamental changes in the country.
